My dear hubby is from AL – which means he prefers mustard based BBQ sauces–which are not easy to find here in the mountain west – and definitely a challenge to find a good recipe that is sugar free and THM friendly. So – I decided to create it myself–based on the flavors that he likes.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we have 🙂
Southern Smothering Sauce – Mustard Based BBQ – THM FP
1 1/2 C mustard (I prefer brown spicy – but any will work)
1/2 C ACV
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp mineral salt
1-2 tsp chicken bouillon powder
¾ tsp stevia (more to taste if you like it sweeter)
2 tsp blackstrap molasses
2 Tbl tomato paste
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2-3 sprinkles hickory smoke liquid
For variety you can add cinnamon or ginger – or my hubby’s favorite – Franks Hot Sauce.
Mix together – I just put it all in a bowl and use a whisk – easy peasy.
This is GREAT as is mixed with pulled pork or chicken. This does make a thick sauce— I thin it down if needed – or keep thick and use as a base for sandwich spreads, dips, dressings, or over veggies. It mixes well with plain non-fat yogurt.
Please share any other variations you come up with or fun uses as you ‘make this your own’–thanks!!
